Gratitude
Midwinter reflections
Christmas morning, dark slowly lifting behind the sea and mountains. Twinkling orange lights far away on the north of the peninsula. Billy lying beside me, quiet, his warmth, breath and soft fur a comfort.
Yesterday I received a letter. A friend wrote to me of gratitude at this midwinter time. I have not received a physical letter for many years, and as I read I was undone. The kindness, the beauty of the words, the generosity, the spirit of connection, the beauty of the handwriting. The friendship. My young friend wrote of belonging, and community, and a common purpose that brings like minded people together.
Connecting by common thread, nature binds us in her resilient weave, captivates us, nurtures us, makes us better humans. The very woven fabric of the world reminding us of the best of being human.
As I enjoy time with loved ones, with my animal companions, and look out at the sea and mountains, I feel a stirring of belonging too. Today my heart will be filled with gratitude for all that I have in my life, for new friendships forged, deeply bound by community and the wonder that is nature.
Sending midwinter gratitude to my Substack friends, I value you all deeply, and hold you close to my heart, you inspire me, strengthen me, and help me find a voice.
Thank you

Such beautiful pictures, and how special it is to receive a letter.
What a lovely Christmas. I’m envious of your sunshine (we’re under cloud from the east) and animal companions. Mind you, I’ve just spent a couple of hours poking around ancient woodland, exploring lichens, fungi and animal signs.
Best wishes for 2026.
